Admiral Louis de Bougainvillea, the French Navigator, journeyed to the Pacific Ocean in 1768; along the way he discovered the vine now named after him. Bougainvillea (Nyctaginaceae) is a native of South America and grows prolifically in the warm areas of the U.S. This gnarled-trunk vine is actually an evergreen that will spread horizontally as well as downward; it can be a hedge, ground cover, or trained into a tree or just potted. This vine's flowers are a magnificent splash of color!
